MAKING TIME FOR FOOD
Being in class with an empty stomach is no joke: you are dizzy, your attention span is short, and you need to mask the growls coming from your gut. School pressure, part time jobs, being away from home, and social stresses hinder students from healthy eating habits.
Stress causes student to either eat too little or too much, it also causes them to indulge in non-stop eating of unhealthy foods such as pizza, burgers, chips, processed food, drinking caffeine and sodas. Other favorite bad eating habit are skipping meals and yoyo eating. Because of the lack of knowledge that they have, these bad eating habits, eventually become a part of their lifestyle.
“Lack of time para magbreakfast pati minsan lang ako kumakain sa sobrang pagod galing school wala na akong ganang kumain kahit paguwi ko” said Dale Ronel A. Wong, BSAC- 4. Dale skips meal everyday.
Students are not really aware of the terrible effects this bad eating habits can have. “Eating unhealthy foods leads to malnourishment. and excess eating leads to obesity. Skipping meals may lead to peptic ulcer”, as Dr. Elaine Atilano of Zamboanga City General Hospital said.
Students may be aware that what they are taking in is bad for their health but continues doing it beccause it has become something they can't avoid.
“I'm aware that what i'm eating sometimes di ganun kahealthy and yung hindi ko pagkain sa oras masama para sa body ko kaso lang, sa sobrang busy I have no choice”, said Wong.
What most students are not aware of is, there are still ways on how to terminate these bad eating habits. Dr. Monique Penaflor of Zamboanga City General Hospital said, “self-discipline is the ultimate mean to do that. Stop eating junk foods. If you can't totally eliminate, at least minimize.”
This issue about bad eating habits might not sound alarming yet to students, but they should put in mind that to be successful it is a necessity to have a healthy body.
Masayuki F. Sakai, a BSOA-3 was asked if he thinks there is still a possibility for students to avoid these bad eating habits and answered, “Magbabago? Depende siguro kung hindi papasok ang teacher”. Students may just take this issue as a joke, but what can happen to them because of having these bad eating habits can turn into a serious problem.
