Addiction - Santos - DotA Addiction

AN EPIC BATTLE BETWEEN DOTA AND GIRLFRIEND

When he finally managed to pry his eyes away from the computer monitor to check the clock, Patrick saw that it was already 10 pm. He got so caught up with playing that he forgot he was supposed to be at Patio Palmeras Restaurant three hours ago. He wondered if his date would still be there, waiting for him to arrive for their anniversary dinner.

There is nothing extraordinary about Patrick. Like many other boys in Ateneo de Zamboanga University College, he gets by in his classes and can be seen more often loafing in different corners of the campus, or smoking a cigarette outside the gate, or playing DotA inside a nearby internet shop with his friends.

His girlfriend, April, is more laidback and reserved. She is friendly and approachable, studious but not nerdy. April and Patrick have been together for roughly a year. Both are deeply committed to the relationship. But lately, things between them are shaky because of Patrick’s addiction to the video game DotA.

Patrick’s DotA addiction started November 2008. It was during the semestral break, he had nothing much to do with April in Manila on vacation. April became fully aware of her boyfriend’s addiction only June of this year. “Nagbago na siya. At first it was okay with me that he goes with his friends to play DotA. But later on I realized that wala na pala siyang time for me and for our relationship. Nalulungkot at naiinis ako at the same time” April explained.

April didn’t expect Patrick to get so hooked on the game. The initial idea of letting Patrick enjoy some male bonding time with his friends evolved into something serious and problematic, with their relationship on the line. “I don’t want this relationship to fail. Sana naman maintindihan niya ako na I can never do this alone. I want his eyes to be fixed on me. I want his attention. I want him back” she said.

“Nakakaadik talaga siya. I enjoy playing it with all of my friends”, exclaimed Patrick. He was unable to resist his friends who would sometimes physically drag him to the internet cafĂ© to play.

“I don’t care how much money I spend on it as long as I get the most of what I pay for. Enjoy talagang mag-DotA” Patrik said. He never expected the recreation to actually come between him and his girlfriend. “Once nakastart ka nang maglaro, you can’t help but play with it until sa magsawa at mapagod ka na. Pero ako? Imposibleng magsawa at mapagod ako kase my life revolves around DotA na.”

DotA, or Defense of the Ancients, is an online role-playing game popular to the youth today. The object of the game is for each team to destroy their opponent’s heavily guarded structures situated at opposing corners of the map known as “Ancients”. Players upgrade their heroes or characters and use gold to buy equipment used on their mission.

April said she has caught Patrick lying to her because of DotA. "Nagtext ako sa kanya. I asked him kung where siya. Magpapasama sana ako sa kanya. Sabi niya he has class daw. Eh nung nagpass by ako sa may internet cafe dun sa may Canelar nakita ko siyang naglalaro! Enjoy na enjoy siya tapos sasabihin niya saken na may class siya? hello?!", April said in an exasperated tone. “I hated him for doing that! Nag-lie na nga siya. tapos wala na nga siyang time for me dahil sa DotA na yan!"

While his girlfriend frets over the future of their relationship, Patrick is trying to ignore April’s complaints against DotA. He said his love for DotA is "normal" for boys his age. He said DotA separates the boys from the girls and without it, his time would be spent wasted..

DotA players race to destroy their own “Ancients”. In real life, Patrick and April have now become like competing DotA characters who have to destroy their own “Ancients”: Patrick’s ancient is his extreme addiction to DotA and April, her total paranoia over her boyfriend’s online addiction.

If one of them decides to level up to heat up the fight even more, then they might just end up being killed in their own battle.

Addictions - Medina - Crazy Addictions

Note: These is an incomplete article.

Crazy Addictions of Ateneo Students

Addiction is an obsession, an excessive psychological dependency. People become addicted to drugs. To alcohol. To food. These addictions harm not just the person’s body but his mind, his social and spiritual life, his work and finances and his very soul.

Some students adhere to the generally accepted definition of addiction. To Noel Torralba, an education student, addiction is a habitual practice that goes beyond the norms and what is expected of you. Legal Management student Paulo Caperig describes addiction as “being attached to something you can’t get off”.

But not all addictions are harmful. Some are just plain crazy with the object of their addictions anything but traditional.

Jobee Barredo, a third year mass communications student, collects Kerokerokeropi items. These are frog cartoon characters from Japan. The Keropi, as it is usually shortened, can be found on anything from mugs to weighing scales. Barredo continues to collect them even if they are more popularly associated with very young children.

A third year economics student who prefers to remain anonymous has such an addiction. He collects branded clothes and accessories. He can be considered a male shopaholic as he finds pleasure with shopping and buying. At present, he already has Gucci, Omega, Salvador Ferragamo, and Escada. Most were bought in Manila but some are from Hong Kong and Singapore.

According to research, the expensive habit of buying expensive clothes and accessories is a way of coping with stress. This can be brought to an extreme, shopping excessively even when it is cleary having a negative impact on other areas of their life. Shopping addicts used it as a way of escaping negative feeling such as depression, anxiety, boredom, self-critical thoughts and anger.

Another student, ______, collects barong tagalogs. ________________

Addicts have a hard time admitting to themselves even to others that they are already addicted to something. The pleasure and the gratification they enjoy from their addiction makes it difficult to detached themselves from what they are addicted to.
It’s natural for humans to cling on to what gives them enjoyment but what makes it less desirable, addicts don’t have that much knowledge or idea on how they should control their addictions. They are not thinking of the result of their addiction, so long as they get that pleasure and satisfaction, they would repeat the same thing over and over again.

Addiction - Larroder - Addiction Backgrounder

ANATOMY OF AN ADDICTION

Pedro is running for his life, blood is dripping from the wounds of his body. He has to reach the nearest town center to get healed. A night elf archer hit him with an arrow. Pedro is scared of dying. His hands are sweaty from the constant maneuvering of the mouse. His heart is like a drum being banged by a rock star. Suddenly, his enemies get to him. His Necrolit character is killed by the enemy, Venomancer.

“First blood!” shouts the computer.

Pedro Bulalakaw’s life revolves around computer games. He forgets all about food when he sits in front of a computer. He only goes to the bathroom when he has accumulated so much urine he is compelled to do so. When he goes to school, he considers himself rich because of all the violet currency folded in his wallet. At the end of the day, he has dropped to the poverty line with not enough coins for a jeepney fare.

Gaga Loka, 16, is a smoker. Her favorite cigarette is Marlboro Black. She burns through one pack of cigarettes each day. To go with her smoking, Gaga has a collection of lighters ranging from those with playboy stickers to those with flashlights. Every time she smokes, her lips dry out like a cactus plant. Fragments of dead skin from her lips become visible for people to see. By the age of 19, she could be dead because of lung cancer.

Both these characters are real people. There is no exaggeration made in the stories. All information stated is true except for their names. Both Pedro and Gaga have one thing in common: they cannot rid of an addiction.

Addiction starts from a habit. When a person has a habit turned into a necessity, it takes the shape of an addiction. Making the body accustomed to something good such as studying or bad such as smoking is an addiction. If Gaga Loka is addicted to studying, she would leave her health for granted and her outward appearance unchecked.

Addiction causes a person to act in a pattern of unhealthy behavior which they carry out uncontrollably. Addicts have psychological and physical dependency on their addiction. Addiction is not limited to substance abuse such as alcohol or cigarettes. It can also be an uncontrolled behavior such as sex addiction or gambling. Any individual can become addicted even if addiction does not run into the family. Once people start to take drugs or repeat certain behaviors because it makes them feel good or has a certain effect on their body, then they become addicts. If there was no effect on them, then people will not repeat the experience. What can start as an experiment or a casual behavior can lead to addiction. With time, the brain’s chemistry starts to adapt, demanding more and more from the addiction.
Pedro and Gaga suffer a persistent need to use or do something to feel normal. They use their addiction to cope up with everyday life. They continue to use or do something despite negative experiences and dangerous situations that it creates.

Addiction is a coping mechanism for them. They channel all their problems, depressions and anxieties to addiction, whether they know it or not. Pedro Bulalakaw just broke up with his girlfriend. He becomes depressed. He would play computer games to temporarily relieve his depression. But Pedro does not know that the world of computer games also has its harmful effects on him and his health. People become addicts because of their environment. Gaga Loka lives in an environment where smoking is common. Her family and friends smoke. So she tries to copy them and becomes addicted to smoking.

“Usually addiction can steam from a mannerism. Mannerisms are usually little behaviors that may not yet interfere with the day-to-day functioning. When it becomes dysfunctional, it then becomes an addiction” said Estesa Xaris C. Que-Legaspi, Director of the College Guidance Office. Mannerisms are routines of behavior that are repeated regularly, it tends to occur subconsciously without directly thinking consciously. Habits sometimes goes unnoticed in persons exhibiting them, because the person no longer analyzes what he is doing. When a habit becomes a necessity and not just a repeated action then it becomes an addiction
Addiction can have a lot of effects not just to the addict but also to his surroundings. If left unchecked, a person’s health is on the line. If Gaga Loka continues to smoke one pack of cigarette each day, she will harm her lungs and develop lung cancer. If Gaga Loka does not perform well in her studies because of constant coughing, she may be dropped from school. Her family will have to pay a large amount to admit her in the hospital.

Aside from losing his girlfriend and becoming poor, Pedro Bulalakaw will make his parents worry and ruin his future. He might end up living in Tondo with several kids and unemployed.
“The first step these people need to do is to admit that they are addicts” said Que-Legaspi. Before Pedro and Gaga can start addressing their problems, they first need to fully admit that they have a problem. Until this happens, change cannot take place. Once they have owned up their addiction and grasped the seriousness of the situation, then comes the willingness to change things for the better. Que-Legaspi also said if addicts cannot admit their problem, then intervention may take place.

Malpractices - Bucoy - Bad Eating Habits

MAKING TIME FOR FOOD

Being in class with an empty stomach is no joke: you are dizzy, your attention span is short, and you need to mask the growls coming from your gut. School pressure, part time jobs, being away from home, and social stresses hinder students from healthy eating habits.

Stress causes student to either eat too little or too much, it also causes them to indulge in non-stop eating of unhealthy foods such as pizza, burgers, chips, processed food, drinking caffeine and sodas. Other favorite bad eating habit are skipping meals and yoyo eating. Because of the lack of knowledge that they have, these bad eating habits, eventually become a part of their lifestyle.

“Lack of time para magbreakfast pati minsan lang ako kumakain sa sobrang pagod galing school wala na akong ganang kumain kahit paguwi ko” said Dale Ronel A. Wong, BSAC- 4. Dale skips meal everyday.

Students are not really aware of the terrible effects this bad eating habits can have. “Eating unhealthy foods leads to malnourishment. and excess eating leads to obesity. Skipping meals may lead to peptic ulcer”, as Dr. Elaine Atilano of Zamboanga City General Hospital said.
Students may be aware that what they are taking in is bad for their health but continues doing it beccause it has become something they can't avoid.

“I'm aware that what i'm eating sometimes di ganun kahealthy and yung hindi ko pagkain sa oras masama para sa body ko kaso lang, sa sobrang busy I have no choice”, said Wong.

What most students are not aware of is, there are still ways on how to terminate these bad eating habits. Dr. Monique Penaflor of Zamboanga City General Hospital said, “self-discipline is the ultimate mean to do that. Stop eating junk foods. If you can't totally eliminate, at least minimize.”

This issue about bad eating habits might not sound alarming yet to students, but they should put in mind that to be successful it is a necessity to have a healthy body.

Masayuki F. Sakai, a BSOA-3 was asked if he thinks there is still a possibility for students to avoid these bad eating habits and answered, “Magbabago? Depende siguro kung hindi papasok ang teacher”. Students may just take this issue as a joke, but what can happen to them because of having these bad eating habits can turn into a serious problem.

Malpractices - Lim - Canteen Etiquette

CANTEEN (BAD) BEHAVIOUR

It’s 12:00 noon, Rina is half tired and half hungry. She goes straight to the back canteen with nothing in her mind but the crispy fried chicken that the canteen always serves. As she steps inside, a single drop of sweat runs across her temple. It is no surprise that she sees the canteen swarming with parents, college, and elementary students at this hour. As usual, all sits are taken. She waits patiently until, fortunately, she sees a group of college students leaving their table. She notices that as they leave, they do not even bother to bring their plates with the scraps of chicken and half-empty Icecapade cups to the designated area. The table is a filthy sight. A sight that make Rina lose the ravenous appetite she had just moments ago. The crispy fried chicken is now completely out of her mind. Half tired and half furious, she decided to just leave the canteen in order to keep her sanity.

Rina, a second year college student, is not the first to go through the above experience. It is a fact that most Ateneo students leave their plates, cups, mineral water bottles, junk food wrappers and other variety of trash at the table after they have enjoyed its contents, ignoring a most basic table etiquette.

One of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University cooperative workers, Mark (not his real name), says that in his eight years of working at the back and front cafeterias, he observed that
the condition of the canteen actually worsens with each year. Not because the canteen has gotten older, but because the students using the canteen as has become more irresponsible and more apathetic with each passing year.

Mark explained that the canteen administration has tried many things to improve cleanliness at the canteens and to discipline the students. From pop-up reminders at each table to ten minute TV infomercials inside the back canteen. None of these helped, he said. Now, instead of pop-ups, they placed font-size 42 reminders at each table hoping that this will be the solution to their problem.

These days symbols or signs are being used in order to persuade people from purchasing and doing certain things. Like the Olay Total Effects that fights the seven signs of skin ageing and Nido that shows the seven signs of good nutrition. These products used signs in order to make us realize that “Oh! I have to try Olay because I have fine lines and all.”

In this case, cleanliness is being sold. And here are the seven signs why you should start bringing your dirty plate to the designated area and throw your trash in the proper receptacle.

One, it will not take away even a minute of your precious time. Now, there is no point in saying “I’m in a hurry or I have not time.”

Two, it is a matter of knowing the basic table etiquette. Now is the time to practice it. Discipline yourself.

Three, it is the simplest way of showing respect to other. Think about the next person using the table. Remember that the table is not your property.

Four, you will help save the time of one of the canteen’s employees. It is a way of showing respect and kindness toward them.

Five, it is a way of showing that you care about being clean. What’s better way of showing that you are a clean person than by disposing your own trash properly?

Six, it is good for the eyesight. Nothing looks better than a sparkling clean table.

Seven, it feels great knowing that you did something good. It actually feels like receiving a reward.

These are just seven ways of thinking of it. There are millions of people out there. And so there are millions of ways of thinking. But consider that sometimes it is not about what you think or what others think. Just look at what is presented in front of you, if this is for the better, then follow it.

Simply follow the rule. Nothing will be lost.

THIS WORK OF UY NEEDS ADDITIONAL EDITING BY ME

MARJ, JILL, DO NOT EDIT YET
The need to have others think of them as beautiful is strong among the youth. The female students of Ateneo de Zamboanga University is no exception.
Advancements in cosmetics technology has made physical beauty more accessible now. Skin can be smoothened, whitened, softened with thousands of products available in the market. There are of course make-up: lipstick, eye shadow, face powders. Addiction to these beauty products is fairly common.
Dermatologic products, or products that work to improve the skin complexion, is a common object of product addiction.

Staying beautiful is common among teenagers and young adults. And you can see that circle in the campus of Ateneo De Zamboanga (AdZU), people looks even younger not just with their ages but also with how they look. Just like Angela Pamaran who is taking up BSecon – II, she said lotion (Vaseline) and facial cream (Ponds) is two of her secrets to simply lighten her complexion. Or as Carmina Recito (BSBio – II) says “Deodorant (anti- per spirant – Derma Product) because it protects my underarms from germs and perspiration. It keeps me fresh and secure everyday.” Marvi Arcillas Erfe a BSAc – I, uses Lotion (Myra –E) and Facial wash (Clean and Clear) she said “I use it to go with the trend and to stay beautiful.” Patricia Tan a BSN – II G says “Lotion ng Belo may quality kasi ang Belo na wala ang iba.”
Other students use beauty products they are immune too, just like Marlyn Atari a BSBA-II uses Soap (Belo) and Facial Foam (Nivea) “kasi yun ang nakasanayan” she says. In addition to that, Niza Sindiong a BSN –II G, also the cover girl of the latest issue of beacon magazine, said “Facial wash (Ponds) to prevent pimples, kasi dumadami ang pimples ko pag gumagamit ako ng ibang brand.” Also from BSN – II G, Maica Andrea Prado said “Powder (Johnson’s) to avoid oily face. Kung wala lang oil hinid na ako magpa-powder except lang pag may party dapat bongga.”
Aside from the product that they use for everyday, most students has a beauty secret that will surely deceive anyone with how they look even if they feel stressed out from their school work or their social life, students like Masayuki Sakai, Rose Anne Climaco, Renz Aguada all from BSOA, Danica Bucoy, Nhordz Jawali, Sherry Mae Epanto, Ryan Muricia, Ana Carlyn Lim all from BSMC, Kyoko Daka from BSPsych, Hazel Antatico from BSIS and Ned Edzel Nohay from BSBA has revealed their secret on how they look their best in everyday drama.
This serves a countdown to reveal the most used beauty products. At number five is the Mascara, they are lots of different mascaras, from clear mascara to black to blue mascara to green, and with that comes on the different brushes of mascara to make it look thicker, longer and etcetera. It is said by the beautician from Reyes: Hair cutters that mascara is used to make the eys look dramatic and enhances your beautiful eyes. Kim Kardashian a reality TV star and the daughter of Defense attorney Robert Kardashian who defended OJ Sipmson, she is also known for her signature look, the smokey eye, which cannot be completed without the heavy mascara used. The usual brand used are Revlon and Everbilena.
At number four would be the Perfume/ Cologne, even if it is not use on the face but this does not mean it is not important to stay fragrant. It is one thing that you should apply after you put on make-up. it is not just about looking beautiful nut of course to smell beautiful. The usual brand used are Victoria’s Secret and Johnson’s.
Cheek tint/ Blush is on number three, this is use to make your face look fresh and natural, it makes your face look thin if you are chubby or make your face look chubby if you are thin. But sometimes other people use the check tint or blush in the wrong way; they use it as if it is a crayon and apply more and more each time because they think it is not going to be notice that much and the outcome of that is they would look like a clown. A little of any cheek tint or blush goes a long way so learn how to use it well to look naturally pretty. The usual brands used are Careline, Bench , Simply Pretty, Everbilena and Revlon.

Addictions - Cabugnason - Facebook addiction

ADMIT IT, YOU'RE A FACEBOOK ADDICT

Do you spend more time Facebook-ing than studying? Do you sleep less because of Facebook? Do you know what Farm Town, Farm Ville and Pet Society are? If you do, then you are probably a certified Facebook addict.

Facebook is an Internet Social Networking Site similar to Friendster and Multiply. Facebook is the latest and most popular social networking site in the internet. It appeals to multiple age groups and people with a wide range of interests. It now has approximately 300 million users.
Rania Sahibbil, a 2nd year nursing student chooses Facebook or FB as her social networking site. “I am addicted to facebook,” Rania said. She said her friends always ask her about Pet Society, an application in FB. Because of her good scores, friends ask her for advise on how to get high paw points. She revealed that she has to play the application everyday to increase her paw points.

She first heard about Facebook last year when it was not yet very popular. The first thing she did when she had her Facebook account was to add friends. “Exciting,” Rania said. “Feel ko, parang magugustuhan ko ito.”

After a few days, Rania says she was spending 14 hours a day on Facebook. She tries to resist it but finds that she cannot. “I love the fame Pet Society,” she said. “Dahil sa ginawa kong pet na cute and sa mga items doon.”

There are a lot of people like this that they find the facebook world more enjoyable place to spend time than the real world. Probably their main reason why they do this is because they want to escape from the reality that they can’t own this certain thing that they like, and when they find it on the internet, they focus on it and that’s it. They find it happy because at least, they now have the power of owning that certain thing that they like even in a virtual world. Another reason for this can also be about your real friends whom you think doesn’t care for you, a fight with your bf/gf, etcetera. For instance, you are at home, alone, there’s nothing you can do that you get bored or had a bad day because you had a fight with your bf/gf, or you got pissed off with your friends, and that is why you would also escape from it and you try to explore new things on the internet especially in social networking. You chat with your other friends; you go online together and sometimes play together.

However, Owen’s article said that this thing could lead to addiction in social networking. If you are spending so much time on such sites because you are unable to spend a day away from FB although internet social networking is useful, in a way that you can communicate with your other friends or relatives in other country. Going back to the story, Rania says Facebook is the first thing she does when she wakes up and the last thing she does before she goes to sleep. “I wake up at 6AM and I go straight to my computer and log-on to facebook. I get excited every time I check my account because there are a lot of friends requests that needs to be accepted and this makes me happy…” Rania said. “Kasi naman feel ko maganda tingnan ang profile kapag madaming friends.” She added.

Rania knows she is addicted because she loses sleep over it and is tired every morning because of late night friend-ing. She spends more than three hours a day on it. She tried to go a day without Facebook and found herself stressed and out anxious.

She is addicted to the game Pet Society and other games like Farm town and Farm Ville, writing her blog, chatting with her other friends and taking Facebook quizzes. But Rania says she knows all this and is also worried at how much time she spends on Facebook, given that she is a student who has to be responsible with her time. “Ok lang yun. Nagagawa ko pa rin naman ang mga requirements o assignments ko. I just have to check my Facebook account kasi baka may friend request. =)”

Addictions- Navarro - Campus Tambayans

CAMPUS TAMBAYANS

Students will always look for outlets to relieve the stresses brought on by seemingly endless lectures, projects, home works and other requirements they have to deal with.

So where do students go to relax? People in the know know where the good “tambayans” are.
In their “tambayans”, students feel they are free to think of anything, the latest gossips at school, their crushes, everything they want to think of without worrying about their academic responsibilities. In their tambayans, students can forget their physics class, thinking, lessons from that class have no bearing on their social status and in their daily lives. And they can do all these with friends, without whom the concept of tambayan will not be complete.

A popular hangout within campus is the blue log at the backfield. This is a favorite of lovers because it is a little isolated. Some students find that stress can be relieved by just being with your boyfriend or girlfriend, enjoying the nice ambiance, the fresh air, and the cool shade.

Another is the library. Instead of thinking of the library as another stressor, some students head to the library to relax. The main attraction is the air conditioner. Another attraction is the relative quiet and the fact that students can take a nap without fear of being punished for doing so.

The kiosks are also popular. You can find rows of them in ADZU. But aside from simply hanging out, these kiosks are also frequently used by students to hurriedly finish requirements, definitely a stressor.

Outside campus, the tambayans many students go to often are Lola’s, Trebor’s, and Vanda. In these places, stress is relieved not just by being with friends but by eating comfort food. At Lola’s, you can forget your problems in ENG211 if you try their famous Beef Curry. But if you do not have a lot of money, you could try their equally famous Maggi Kari with egg. If you do have the money, shawarma at Vanda is the food to eat.

At Trebor’s, students eat their “turon” or the house specialty “pastil” while smoking. For better or for worse, many students smoke to relieve stress.

Students feel a huge need to hangout for their well-being. Some get so comfortable in their tambayan that they are tempted to ditch school. As with all vices, hanging out is best done in moderation.

Addiction - Avanzado - Paid Addiction

Haru Wee (not her real name) sometimes slits her wrist to cope with sadness. Pain to relieve pain.

“Nagiging ok ako kapag nasasaktan ang sarili ko. Doon ko kasi nalalabas ang galit at hinanakit ko. Yun yung coping mechanism ko ‘pag depressed ako.” Haru is a 17-year old college student of Ateneo de Zamboanga University.

She looks just like hundreds of other ADZU coed. She is fashionable, a bit emo, a bit rocker. Only her eyes and the hunch of her shoulder reveals a little of how she feels. She feels alone. She had been through heartbreaks. She wants to scream and forget about how depressed she is. But she just cannot. What she can do is hurt herself. She slits her wrists. She bangs her head into walls. She also punches the wall until her knuckles bleed. In these ways she feels good.

That is Haru.

It is not easy when you feel overwhelmed by painful emotions and situations. You feel pressured. You think negatively over things.

Inflicting pain to yourself may be one of those solutions that right away pop in your mind when you want to relieve pain. This mentality may be common to some depressed people such as Haru. Painful acts become physically dangerous means of coping with depression.

Depression is a clinical state where you become physiologically inactive. It basically leads you to suppress your own worth. It also affects your thoughts. You become grounded on emotional pain.

Why do some depressed people think that pain can relieve pain?

“We do not know. It is on their perception,” Psychology professor Jayson Sabdilon said.

They may be disturbed and confused. A lot of things are swirling in their heads that they do not know what is right to do. They may think that pain is needed to equate pain.

It may also be because of their curiosity. When depressed, they explore and later on realize that in inflicting pain to themselves they can express their emotions, making it a coping mechanism just like in the case of Haru.

Does it need to be prevented?

Yes. Any harmful or painful act must be prevented. It is healthy neither to yourself nor to the people around you.

Sabdilon said that talking it out with friends, trusted elders, teachers, and counselors would help. You have to ask questions: What is painful? Why is it painful? What will I do? “Express” yourself. He added that misunderstanding with people around you could happen if you don’t express. This would be useful for them to know what to do to help you. If you are that sick, seek medication right away. Consult those experts in the field.

Find someone or something that can motivate you to stop hurting yourself whenever problems arise. Don’t give yourself the additional burden of trying to deal with it alone. Talking things through can give you opportunity to consider other solutions to problems. It may help you feel less alone, more cared, and understood.

Life is a series of ups and downs. Your attitude towards it matters.

Malpractices - Hongco - Absenteeism

BEING ABSENT: WILL? WON'T? WHY?

If a good student is someone who is never absent from class, can you call yourself a good student?

Being absent or ditching from class due to reasons unacceptable to the school is generally not considered cool by students. However, it is exactly what most students do. A few honest students readily admit that laziness is the root cause of most, if not all, of their absences. They are also quick to point fingers: “If teachers also get absent from class once in a while because they just don’t feel like teaching, why can’t we?”.

Criselle Puno, a 2nd year BSMC student of Ateneo de Zamboanga University, said that she is guilty of being absent from class due to laziness. She is not alone. A 3rd year BSN student who refused to give his name, also confessed that the reason he always misses his classes is because he just “doesn’t feel like sitting in a boring six-hour class”.

Francis Jay Llenado, Director of Student Affairs, has observed these tendencies. He points out that even though the College Student Handbook clearly outlines the consequences of being absent too often, the sad truth is that most students do not even bother reading it. In the handbook, the allowed number of hours for absences is five for a two-unit subject, seven for a
three-unit subject and 12 for a five-unit subject within a given semester.

A student who has exceeded the allowed number of hours for absences, unless excused, is dropped from the class. Llenado also explained that dropping a student is a teacher’s decision. When asked what he thinks is the reason why students commit unnecessary absences, he simply said that it is possible that these students are just using the allowed number of hours for absences as an opportunity to skip class and engage in other recreational activities.

Teachers also express their concerns regarding the students’ performance in class. Some of them are even good enough to still reconsider students to pass the course despite having multiple absences. A Religious Studies teacher said that as long as the student presents a letter signed by the parents, he will still reconsider the student to stay in his class. It is not anymore his job to question or doubt the letter’s authenticity which will just lead to the student’s embarrassment. He admitted that he had no idea why students love skipping classes.

Most of the times, parents are the last to know about absenteeism in their children. Roland
Dolotina, a father of a college student, shared how he kept on giving his son baon and expecting him to do well in school, only to find out later that his son was dropped from one of his major subjects because of excessive absences. He said he had no idea that his son absented himself so much from class. Dolotina concluded that whether the reason is valid or not, all students commit absences, and that ditching is “part of a student’s life”.

Malpractices - Bunda - Noise in the Library

SHH! THIS IS THE LIBRARY!

Miss Bookish took a deep breath to calm her nerves. There she was, seated at a far corner of the library, desperately trying to cram all sorts of information into her cranium when a group of giggling, gossiping and gamboling girls sat beside her at the table. Miss Bookish ignored them and tried her best to remain focused on her notes. The girls, however, continued to annoy her with their silly topics of boys, make-up, more boys, clothes, boys yet again, etc., etc. Miss Bookish finally lost it when one of the girls banged her fist on the table and shook with uncontrollable laughter, causing Miss Bookish to jump out of her seat. Miss Bookish then glared at the girls, hissed at them, and signaled that they keep quiet.

She hoped they would get the message. She hoped they would move out to gossip someplace else. She hoped they would leave her in peace.

The girls twittered away, however, and acted as though Miss Bookish were air. She was thinking of horrifying punishments for the errant library users when the bell rang and they noisily gathered their things. She, too, hurriedly gathered her things, and glaring at the girls’ backs, fell into step behind them, then afterwards sighed and shook her head.

Miss Bookish’s dilemma is not uncommon. Many regular “library geeks” in Ateneo de Zamboanga University know that noise inside the library has become a tradition, of sorts.

One such library geek, Heras Capitanea, a sophomore taking up BSMA, says “nakakainis minsan” (Sometimes it’s irritating) when other students make noise. “Library is library diba; it’s supposed to be a place for studying”. He later adds: “Pero minsan din nag-iingay kami, minsan lang naman” (But sometimes we make noise, too).

“Hindi talaga maiwasan ang pag-usap” (Talking can’t be helped inside the library) shares freshman Trazacil Jimenez, a BSMA student. “Kasi kung may assignment, kailangan ng sharing of ideas, kaya hindi na nasusunod yung observe silence rule” (The observe silence rule is ignored because we need to share ideas while doing our assignments).

While Capitanea and Jimenez admit that noise is unavoidable in the library, a 3rd year BS Psychology student, however, has this to say: “Yeesh. Mga buang jud sila. Maingay kasi. ‘Di ako makaconcentrate kasi ang ingay nila (People are nuts. They’re too noisy. I can’t study because of the noise).

Some students use the library for its intended purposes. Many students, though, seek the library for more colorful reasons.

Amilbahar Mawallil, a 4th year student at BSMC confesses that he goes to the library simply to sleep. “Pumupunta ako don kasi malamig ‘yung aircon, masarap matulog. Sa clinic sana, kasi may kama, kaso wala naman akong sakit, kaya sa library na lang” (I go to the library because it’s a perfect place for sleeping. I thought of going to the clinic because they have a bed there, but I wasn’t sick, so I’d go to the library). He also admitted that “kaso, minsan hindi ako makatulog kasi maingay, kaya pagdating ng mga friends ko, mag-iingay na lang rin ako” (Sometimes I can’t sleep because of the noise so when my friends come I just chat with them).

Some, like senior Nursing student Gem Dayrit, shares her sentiments with Mawallil: “Maganda mag-ingay don! Gustung-gusto ko don. ‘Di naman kami napapagalitan, nagtiting-ting (referring to the bell-ringer) lang man sila sa ‘min” (I like it there! Even if we make noise, they just ring the bell and that’s it.)

Senior BSMC student Almera Sulan also admits that she makes noise in the library whenever the library staff is out of sight. “Kapag masarap yung usapan minsan ‘di ko na napapansin na lumalakas na pala yung boses ko (I get really loud when a story is so interesting).”

Noise in the library had not only earned the ire of students, but also the ire of the librarians. Nikko Ballovar, usually found on the ground floor at the Periodical section, expresses her frustration with the noisemakers. “I’m very frustrated with those people because of the noise they make. Although there are other places where they could go to talk, they insist on coming here and make noise. It’s supposed to be a library, a place for reading and studying, and yet they are doing just the opposite.”

Emiline Tuazon, the Reference Staff, says she feels sorry for the students who read and study there. “They get distracted by the noise, and they can’t concentrate” she says.

To combat the noise caused by students, the library staff installed aluminum glass frames to the tables, effectively separating the groups of students. This has generated mixed feedback from both the library staff and students. For Tuazon, the glass frames have helped reduce the noise inside the libray. “Since there’s a wall between them, they can concentrate more on their work instead of talking to their friends. Besides, the frames were designed so each student can have their own personal work space so they can work solo.”

Students like Felomena Baal, a 4th year from BSMC, think that the frames are ineffective. “May naririnig pa rin akong bulung-bulongan, nakakairita. Sumikip lang tuloy ang library” (I can still hear people whispering, it’s irritating. The library feels more cramped than before).

The 3rd year Psychology student who insists to remain unnamed said that “parang nasa loob ako ng aquarium. I know it’s supposed to reduce noise pero maingay pa rin. Yeesh. (I feel like I’m in an aquarium. It’s supposed to reduce noise but people are still noisy).

Asked whether the frames have clammed up noisemakers, Mawallil said that he has doubts. “Hindi man. ‘yung iba sige pa rin sa pagkukuwentuhan. ‘Dun nila mina-maximize yung pagkuwentuhan nila sa mga tables na wala pang frames” (Not really. I still see people talking at tables where there are no frames).

Whether students frequent the library for the right reasons or not, it is no doubt one of the most popular places to stay in. For Miss Bookish, her kindred souls, and the librarians, time will tell when students will eventually find the heart to regard that simple yet venerable sign: OBSERVE SILENCE IN THE LIBRARY.

Malpractices - Jawali - Nightlife

I LOVE THE NIGHTLIFE

Joey (not his real name) may look like a “boy-next-door” type of guy but actually, aside from being a generally good Ateneo college student on weekdays, he is also a “party hard” type of guy on Saturdays. You will find him almost every weekend nights in bars.

A 20-year old Business Management student, Joey is hoping to graduate this school year. For more than three years now in college, he had been going to bars with friends on weekend nights, mostly on Saturdays, to disco at Halo, Latitude or Ground Zero, or to just hang-out at the bars in the Catribo complex. It has been quite his routine but no schedule is actually made. He simply goes along with friends who invite him. Residing in Tetuan, it is not much of a bother for him to go to places, especially because he has his own motorcycle.

A way to relax and release stress caused by school stuff—this is how he defines his nightlife. However, it is not much of a stress reliever when some of his night-out buddies unexpectedly get into trouble.

Joey claims his academic performance is “okay” so far and he thinks that nightlife has nothing to do with his grades. Financially, he does not do allotment and budgeting. He spends available cash enough for himself because he goes out with friends in KKB(Kanya-kanyang bayad) basis. His parents also do not mind at all.

Though many go to the disco to meet new people, Joey is already contented with the groups of friends he has. He may hang out with different groups but he got some consistent night-out buddies.

As for his lovelife, Joey’s got a girlfriend. They have been together for more than three years now but his girlfriend does not exactly know his whereabouts all the time. There are problems that may arise because of this but again, Joey claims he knows how to handle the situation.

Joey values his spiritual life. With the retreat he recently attended, he realized that some aspects of his nightlife contradicts with some Jesuit concepts of a spiritual life. However, he still considers himself a devout Catholic.

For Joey, there’s really nothing wrong with nightlife. He does not necessarily recommend it to other students but he believes that while still young, teenagers should also try to socialize and give time to enjoy life because “age is something that goes up and never goes down” and time can never be turned back.

Malpractices - Ariel - Cramming and Procrastination

STUDENT AS CRAMMER AND PROCRASTINATOR

Matt is 8 minutes late. His Philosophy class’ long quiz has already started when he arrived panting at the classroom door. He quickly sat down and begged for paper from his seatmate who gave Matt what he wanted with a deep frown. The teacher was already reading question number 7. Matt cursed to himself for missing six questions: If only he woke up early that day. He overslept because he went to bed at 3 o’clock in the morning doing his English class project which was due today. He is not ready for this announced quiz. He had tried to review his notes when he was on his way to school. While taking the quiz, Matt could not concentrate. He could already guess what his score will be.

This scene is common among students. Every student has committed, at least once in his college career, the crime of cramming and procrastination.

Cramming is working intensively to absorb large volumes of informational material in short amounts of time while procrastination is a behavior characterized by the deferment of tasks to a later time. Students usually cram to prepare for an exam while procrastinating is used as a mechanism for coping with the anxiety of starting a task or decision.

The effects of procrastination are stress, a sense of guilt, the loss of personal productivity, the creation of crisis and disapproval from others for not fulfilling one’s responsibilities.

It is caused by psychological issues of anxiety, low sense of self worth and a self- defeating mentality. Further procrastination leads to cramming which results to poor long- term retention of the material studied.

Cramming however is considered to be advantageous to others. According to W. G. Sommer, students in a university system often adapt to the time- constraints that are placed upon them in college, and use cramming to perform well on tests. “Many students outwardly adapt to this system, however, engage in an intense and private ritual that comprises five aspects: calculated procrastination, preparatory anxiety, climactic cramming, nick- of- time deadline- making, and a secret, if often uncelebrated, victory,” Sommer stated in one if his article.

Consider the situation of Jon (not his real name), a 2nd year masscom student who finds cramming and procrastination advantageous and does them because of 3 reasons. First, he said that he can do everything he wants to do like sleeping, playing computer games or going out with his friends during those times that he has to do his assignments or study his lessons. Second, he said that if he makes his homework during those times, the output will usually be ugly because he does not have the mood and he is not interested in doing them. His mind will be usually empty. Third, his mind functions greatly when the deadline for an assignment or the exam is near. “The times when I am motivated to do a requirement is when the deadline is just hours away because my mind will work already,” Jon stated. Thus, cramming or procrastination becomes an advantage and for him they are already part of his system when it comes to his studies.

Sheila V. Lim, a part time teacher from the School of Liberal Arts and a guidance counselor says that students cram and procrastinate because they have a lot to do, so many distractions, they get easily bored, and try to do a number of things at once and they lack focus. On the issue of whose fault it is why students cram and procrastinate, she said that no one’s to blame because as humans, students always have the freedom to choose and to make options. She believes in taking responsibility of one’s actions and knowing one’s priorities in life or even for the week. According to her, if a student knows this, then most likely he or she would not cram because he or she will work for which of significance in his or her life.

But what can a student do to help himself or herself when procrastinating and cramming do not help his or her school performance?

According to Lim, some say that they think well when the deadline right is in front of their noses just like Jon’s case but she believes otherwise. “If you make the most of the allotted time given to you for a project for instance, like a week, then you can slowly plan for it and work for the accomplishment of the project. In that situation, you not only budget time but you can budget your allowance too and will have fun in the process. The leaser stress you will experience and a quality project would most likely be the end product”, she said. “I’ve seen students do their projects a day before the deadline and the end result is glued pages which cannot be read and ends in the wastebasket. Hence, a day has gone to waste not to forget the effort and money spent,” she further explained.

To sum it all, cramming and procrastination can still be removed as bad habits by just
simply changing one’s ways in dealing with responsibilities as a student before they totally destroy one’s ego. But as long as procrastination and cramming are helpful and they have no negative effects on a student’s performance unlike most of the cases, there is nothing to worry.

Inside the Philosophy classroom once again just as the bell rang, Matt sat on his seat with just a pen and a sheet of paper on his desk waiting for the questions from the teacher. A contented smile played on his lips. He had passed his requirements in his Economic class early this morning and he had been prepared for another long quiz since yesterday. He does not have to worry...

Addiction - Sorioso - Pornography

WARNING: EXPLICIT CONTENT
“I can’t believe it happened!” exclaimed Martin (not his real name). He was left home alone on a Saturday afternoon. His parents were at work and he had no idea where his siblings were. He was searching for his portfolio when he came across this old wooden box inside the house’ spare bedroom. He opened it hoping he could find his portfolio. What he saw was not something he expected to find. He had never seen the like of it before, a stranger to his eyes. It was a pornographic CD.
Pornography is any material intended primarily to arouse sexual desire. It may take the form of printed literature, photos, sculpture, drawing, painting, animation, internet, sound recording, film, video or video game. As technology advances and the proliferation of mass media, access to pornography becomes easier. With the increasing number of pornographic websites, these materials are practically one click away.
The word pornography comes from the Greek porne which means whore or prostitutes and graphien which means to write. Early Greeks did frescos or wall paintings on prostitution houses to advertise the services available inside.
Although the CD was unfamiliar, Martin knew that it was porn. How could he not know it? His classmates talk about it all the time and even encouraged him watch one.
“I was curious. I played it on the VCD player. I was nervous. I was uneasy. I was shocked.”
Martin is a 3rd year student of Ateneo de Zambianga University. He is active in his church’s youth group. He attends church service every Sunday and the youth fellowships every afternoon. He reads the Bible a lot, including those readings that warn about the dangers of lust. He chose not to expose his real name for fear of his reputation as a youth leader.
“I felt filthy and impure for doing that (watching the CD). How I hate the owner of that CD!”
He remembered how he scolds his classmates for watching porn. He remembered the simultaneous disgust and pity that he felt for them. Every night, he prayed that his classmates would realize that they were doing something not pleasing to God. “But now, I don’t know if I could do that still.”
To his frustration and shame, he found the temptation much stronger than he was. Eventually, every time he was left home alone, he would find himself getting the CD from the old wooden box and watching its content.
Teens by nature are sexually curious and sexually aggressive. Pornography often serves as an alternative tool for the real sexual act. Instead of really having sex, pornography helps them to be sexually satisfied.
In an informal survey conducted for this article, 10 out of 10 students said curiosity is one of the top reasons for accessing pornographic material. The same students named sexual pleasure as the main reason for accessing it a second time.
All students have seen pornographic materials. The video CD and the internet are the top sources.
Another student, Paul, said, “habang tumatagal, nakakasawa ng panoorin ang porn. It is like watching the same basketball game with just different players—the same thrill, the same plot.”
Opinions vary on the effects of pornography. One student said that pornography can easily lead to students engaging in premarital sex. Half of the students interviewed said that for porn by itself cannot trigger engaging in premarital sex, that other factors are required.
Most religions stand firmly against pornography. Most governments outlaw it. But pornography continues to thrive, with the youth forming a large part of their market.

Addiction - Sumpo - Fashion

MALAKAS IS NOW MAGANDA TOO

Stereotyping in fashion is gone, at least in the sense that it is now socially acceptable for men to be fashion-conscious. There is even a term for such men: metrosexual.

Before, the only men who put on makeup were the gays or performance actors. But today heterosexual males wearing makeup is considered ordinary. Students, professionals, and even macho sports icons use makeup everywhere and every time.

A Japanese website posts an ad about make-overs for men. Other products and services in the website are about spas, jewelry, and beauty salons for men. The existence of these websites, these products and services show that men are now less shy about using cosmetics, curling or straightening their hair, plucking their eyebrows, and smoothing their complexions with facials.

Aside from facial care and cosmetics, dressing up by men is changing. Filipino males are traditionally conservative in their choice of clothes. The Filipino male’s ideal outfit used to be something that was clean and neat, never trendy, never something that will make them stand out. But walking through the Ateneo de Zamboanga University campus on a Friday, the day students do not have to wear their uniform, you will see just how much the typical Ateneo male student have changed in their attitudes to dressing up. Many wear such trendy items as colored pants, very skinny pants, multi-colored shirts, cardigans and jackets. They also now accessorize with large and multiple necklaces and large and multiple bracelets. Definitely, the look is more stylish than conservative.

The time when only women were allowed to beauty conscious, of becoming “shopaholics” and fashion addicts is gone.

Ronald (not his real name) is a fashion addict. He said that primary influence of his addiction to fashion was his mother. He grew up with his mother constantly telling him to look good and presentable. Ronald frequently shops for new clothes and accessories, go to spas for facials, and visit the salon for his hair.

“Today men and women are equal. Women usually are said to be fashionable. But now a lot of men are also fashionable. I myself am very inclined to fashion. I usually shop for good clothes which are the newest trend, even if my closet has overflowed due to my excessive purchase of my desired items” he added.

He also said that another reason for his being an addict to fashion is because he wants to be recognized and respected by his friends and especially by other girls. He said that many of his friends are “de alto sociedad” who do not tolerate inappropriate self-presentation. He continued, “Being fashionista is about style and looks. If you look ugly then you are not a fashionista, and you’ll be rejected by your friends or by the person you like.”

A new study conducted by scientists at the University of Buffalo and the University of Kent in the United States revealed that it is fear of rejection that makes people self-conscious about their looks.

The researches said that the results "suggest that physically attractive people are less stigmatized by others in this society, and have significant advantages in many areas of life than those who are viewed as physically unattractive."

The research further noted that people who put a great pressure on themselves to look attractive putting themselves at the risk of for experiencing negative outcomes that may limit their development and enjoyment of life in many ways.

Kevin Tampol’s style is punk and Goth. For him fashion builds character. “Everyone has to know that when people see the image that you portray, they will consider your personality (based) on the way you look.” As an example, he said that if you dress up like a gangster then people would treat you as a gangster.

For Tampol, pressure from peers is a great factor in the increase of fashion consciousness among young Filipino males. “When you dress inappropriately people might not entertain you. So for me it is really important for me to have a fashion sense, though I really love to look as Goths and punks but still you can’t wear them during Christmas party or birthday party.”

Ronald added that “some people won’t allow you to be with them if you don’t act like them. So being fashionista is really necessary. It can boost your self esteem.”

Some men are fashion-conscious because they wanted to be recognized. Some tend to look appropriately because they don’t want to be rejected. The mentality of recognition and fear of rejection have brought these changes to the image ‘of Malakas.

The icon of Filipino masculinity is Malakas and of Filipino femininity, Maganda. Malakas means fearless and strong and Maganda means beautiful. If Malakas acts like Maganda, should he also be called beautiful?

And if Malakas fears something, such as rejection, should he still be called Malakas?

Querubin: Week #6 at PeaceWorks

May 18
When I read my mail for this week’s assignment, I was surprised about the topic because it is such a delicate situation. And so I immediately requested for clarification on the angle I am to focus regarding the topic. It is about the beheading of an Abu Sayyaf hostage in Basilan.

While searching in the net for latest news about the event, I caught myself reliving memories of my childhood that involved the Abu Sayyaf Group. These internationally known terrorists have been as violent and merciless as I have heard of them since then.

I could not help but get lost in the thoughts of having this Group getting national attention with the latest beheading of one of their hostages.

I learned that poverty can not just steal you from a better life, but it can also serve your head in a platter literally.

May 19
My focus on the topic would be on the reactions from both Christian and Muslim sectors. Today I searched for more information in the internet regarding the beheading of the Abu Sayyaf hostage and every single article brought out tears. Tears that symbolize empathy with the family members who had no choice but to accept their loved one’s fate.

I learned that life is so fragile. It can be taken in a snap. When I was younger, I never really accepted that kidnappings, murder or other criminal acts can happen in the community I live in. I only look at them as possibilities but I never really pictured them as a real case. But working on this story made a huge impact in my perspective about life, social norms and reality.

After research, I went to school to ask friends for possible people to contact for the story. I was then advised to interview a Muslim convener from Interreligious Solidarity Movement for Peace who was a professor in WMSU.

I came to WMSU not knowing where to look for the person and so I inquired a familiar person in the library and was forwarded to the College of Liberal Arts building and after two or three inquiries was forwarded to the Department of Student Affairs and was later informed that he was no longer affiliated with the school and has retired.

But I still got his contact number pasted outside the door of an office in the Executive building.

I realized yet again that information gathering is no easy task.

May 21
I went to the Cathedral to set an interview with the Archbishop but the information officer told me they don’t have a hold on him and directed me to the Sacred Heart Center at Cawa Cawa.

I went to the Center and was informed that the Archbishop is out of town and will be back on a Saturday.

Desperate to interview a representative for the Christian community, I went back to the Cathedral and inquired if a priest was available. The information officer made me wait for a while before relaying the unfortunate news that there is no one I can talk to.

I then asked a friend where else can I find people in authority in under this religion and was advised to go to the Pastoral Council. I inquired the information officer where it is located and immediately went to the office that apparently was closer to my home than where I inquired about it.

When I went in, there was a group of people who I assumed toured around the place with all their amazed faces and picture taking. That is why it took a while before I was entertained by the people in the front desk.

When I was finally paid attention to, the nun who graced an interview was actually more than uncooperative. She declined to answer any of my questions, even her name was kept hidden. She must have thought I would publish her and say that she did not want to say anything. She said she does not want to comment at this point in time. I wonder why.

I left the place with nothing but disappointment.

I then went to PAZ to confirm the number of the Muslim convener from Ate Weds. She then gave it to me informing that he was in Davao at that time. I texted him and made a phone interview appointment.

I am still confused why the nun does not want to say anything about the issue. And I am also surprised to know that priests are hard to find even in the house of God.

I learned that you can never be too sure about things, especially with the way people react to interviews on social matters.

May 22
I went to the City Police Office today to confirm facts I gathered online and interviewed the City Police Director. It was my first time to go to the Office and so I still had to look for the place. After waiting in line with a long list of people wanting to see the Director, I finally got my chance and interviewed him.

After the long stay at the police station, I went to school and called the Muslim convener and conducted an interview.

After lunch, I went to PAZ and looked for Sr. Emma to have my most awaited interview for the Christian sector. She was then out of the office and I was advised to come back after an hour or so.

When I went back, she was extremely busy and asked me to be back after five minutes so that she can settle. After two hours and three failed attempts, she finally gave me the opportunity.

The interview lasted not more than 10 minutes.

My trip to the police station was good for a first time. And my wait for Sr. Emma was paid off with information for representation to the Christian sector.

I learned through the interviews today that kidnapping in Zamboanga and Basilan should never be looked upon as a religiously biased matter. It is not an issue of conflict in faith, but a criminal act immoral to all religion.

Santiago: Week #3 at Fleishman-Hillard

A. List down all the tasks that you performed during this period. Describe each in detail.

My third week in Fleishman was quite busy. I was still tasked to do the daily newspaper monitoring/scanning and looking for any online news, article, or advertisement regarding their clients (Avaya, Etihad, Gardasil) and any article regarding the poll automation and Sen. Angara bill.

Just like last two weeks I was asked to do weekly and daily reports for Avaya. This includes researching, looking for links and documenting the things that we have monitored in the newspapers.

Last week I was asked to call bunch of people. I was asked to look for the contact person for T.V personalities like Kc Concepcion, Edu Manzano, Derek Ramsay, and etc. We were requested to find out who is available for hosting for an event this coming June for one of our clients. We were tasked to find out the talent fees of the above mentioned names.

I was absent last Wednesday because I was sick, I had flu and so I wasn’t able to go to work. When I came back on Thursday we were called for a meeting and were tasked again to call and confirm things with people. We were also asked to do advertorial layouts for selected magazines and newspapers. The clients want a tangible sample for the advertorials.

We were also asked to write an article about Avaya. A news article was given to us and we were asked to find an angle in the astory and localized it here in the Phulippines.

B. Describe new skills you learned, or skills you improved upon as a result of these tasks. Be specific.
At first I was scared and hesitant to talk to people, to talk to people with names in the Media profession, but now I can say that I have overcome that fear and I can confidently talk to people even just on the phone.

C. Other thoughts regarding the OJT experience.
The whole duration of my stay in Fleishman was worth my time; I really had fun and learned a lot. I will surely not forget this once in a lifetime experience. Aside from the facet that this is my first real job, I really have this passion for PR and so I’m considering a career in PR after graduation.

Today is my last day here in Fleishman, my Supervisor is out for an event but he left me things to do for the day. Hopefully I will come back here before leaving for Zamboanga.

Madrigalejo: Week #4 at Manila Times

A. List down all the tasks that you performed during this period. Describe each in detail.

1.) During the beginning of the week, the reporter who covered the Department of Tourism was sick so he could not monitor the latest updates on the said government agency. Since only Rianne and I were the trainees present during that time, and I think Rianne is also working on another story, so I was tasked to get the information for the mean time. Sir Klink tasked me to coordinate with Ms. Likha (she is one of the senior reporters in the business department) because he wants to know how the swine flu pandemic has affected the business scene, particularly the Philippine tourism.

Immediately after securing the complete instructions from Sir Klink and Ms. Likha, I grabbed the phone directory and called the Department of Tourism. I talked to an employee and she told me that the officer-in-charge is currently on a meeting and that I could just call her back at 4:00pm. I called again and I was able to talk to the OIC, and she said that they still do not have the specific figures regarding the number of arriving tourists since the breakout of the AH1N1 virus. According to her, their last records wee still of December 2008. I told this update to Ms. Likha and she said that I could just contact NAIA and inquire about their precautionary measures. She said that I am to write a paragraph or two about it. This would be used as a support for another story.

So I looked up the number of the NAIA in the internet, and eventually go to talk to the Chief of Airport Security, Capt. Tom Cruz. He discussed how they are working hand in hand with the Department of Health and what equipments (such as the thermal scanner and the foot bath) have been put up at the airport to ensure that the no arriving passengers infected with swine flu could get in the country and spread the virus. After getting all the information that I needed, I began writing the story and sent it to Ms. Likha’s email.

2.) About 2 days ago, I have already submitted my article about the flu protection gears—masks and gloves. Since it has not yet come out, I decided to approach Sir Klink (when he was not busy) and asked if he received the article. He told me that he did, then I asked if there was anything more lacking in the story that I wrote and if I could do something about it, that is, if it isn’t too late yet. He said he felt that the lead was not that catchy, and that I could work on it at the moment. Since he was not busy, he explained further how he wants the story to come out and how I can improve my writing. He told me to work on it immediately so I did. I typed the story again, adding few more details that Sir Klink wants to see. When I submitted it, Sir Klink told me that a story from the wires just came in and that he was thinking of using it instead. Personally, it was just ok with me because when I read the story from AFP, it was really more in depth and the supporting claims from the World Health Organization would provide all the information that the readers need to know.

3. Since Rianne is already done with her 150-hour internship, the proof reading section usually has no interns to help them up in case the other proof readers are on day off. It was only during this week that I was given a chance to try and proofread some stories. The lifestyle section and the sports section were the ones assigned to me. It was a good feeling, in a way, to get to read the stories written by others before they actually get published.

I have read the style book of the Manila Times during the course of our training so I was a bit familiar with how the writers must write, the grammar rules they follow, among others. I only had a little difficulty because I am not quite familiar with the signs used when correcting something in a story. I really have not memorized everything yet but I do remember asking Rianne about the basics when she was still around.

4. Most of the time during my last week, I just stayed in the office so I took the opportunity to follow up my story about the Dynamic Teen Company. I talked to Ma’am Chit and Sir Rome. I asked them if they have already received my story and if they have already read it. They both told me that due to the countless number of articles that they receive everyday, they do not have track of everything and they haven’t seem to see my story.

They asked me to send the story again, so I did, for the 5th time already. I asked them after I sent the copies of the story out, hoping that they would get to read it this time. Thankfully, Ma’am Chit was not busy so she spent time reading it. Next thing I know, it was lined up for the Filipino Champions’ page.

B. Describe new skills you learned, or skills you improved upon as a result of these tasks. Be specific.
*Be assertive, but don’t be irritating. You wouldn’t get what you want just by waiting. It is necessary that you do steps to achieve your goal. Just like what a famous writer once said, dreams not accompanied by action plans are mere ideas that would never com to life. If I just assumed that they have read my story and that they will soon publish it, I would probably just leave my story somewhere in the trash bins of their email accounts. But because I wanted it to come out, I asserted for it (nicely) thereby allowing my story to see the light of the day. Before asking for anything though, as a standard operating procedure, ask the person concerned first if he or she is not busy before stating your business. Insisting your concern to a very busy person who is cramming to meet the deadline is just, well, downright irritating.

*Mistakes are normal. Just like in writing a story, even the senior reporters sometimes commit grammatical errors but that does not make them any less of a good writer. It is but human to commit errors and what matters is how you respond to it by doing the necessary corrections and aiming not to commit the same mistake again.

*Patience is a skill. It does pay to wait, and learning it does not really take much but it pays much. 

C. Other thoughts regarding the OJT experience.
On my last visit to the office, I sat down and waited for Miss Weng to arrive. While I was waiting, I grabbed a copy of the Manila Times for that day (May 10, 2009) and found out that my DTC story has already come out. It was such a happy moment. My last day couldn’t get any better. =)

Ampong: Week #4 at Manila Times

A. List down all the tasks that you performed during this period. Describe each in detail.

During the last week of my internship, the only issue that was compelling that time was the arrest of Mr. Jun Lozada in the case perjury filed by Mr. Mike Defensor. He was jailed at the Manila Police District West, where my boss’ headquarters is located. So for most of the week, we stayed there waiting for any development in Mr. Lozada’s Case. I took photos of militants outside MPD rallying to free Mr. Lozada.

I also had the chance to cover the rallies in Ayala Avenue Makati City, in the militant’s cause to raise their minimum wages. There were quite a number of rallies during the week approaching Labor Day. I learned to sneak my way into hordes of huge cameras with all its lenses that could size as half of my head. And I must say that I also got or received a number scary looks of photographer’s from other publications and for most of the time I get away with by “sorry po” and a nervous smile all at the same time.

When I completed my number of hours required, I felt that I still have so many things to learn from the field and from the people that I am with. Albeit the fact that Mr. Rene H. Dilan ( Manila Times’ chief photographer), Mr. Greg San Agustin ( the driver), Mr. Bobby Ranoco (from the Reuters) are in different generation or age group, we get along really well. And it seems that everyday is a whole new day of great experiences and lessons learnt.

I also had the chance to cover the drill of Manila Police for the Labor Day at Luneta. I wasn’t as enthusiastic that day though because I had allergic attack and a spitting dysmenorrheal.

The day after Pacquiao and Hatton’s fight, we went to Divisoria to cover a raid by the police on copies of the recently concluded Battle of the East and West fight.

Days after the Pacquiao Hatton fight, Sir KJ, one of Manial Times’ photographer let me go with him in covering Mr. Pacquiao’s arrival in the country. That was the first dawn shoot I had, it was kind of difficult for me because I had to wake up 2 in the morning to get ready by 3. we arrive in NAIA 2 by 5 o’clock. There were members of the Media both from local and international press. While we were waiting, in front of me was an English correspondent, there photographers form Xinghua a wires service based in China, Reuters (Sir Bobby), AP and EPA were some of the international press to cover the said event.

My last weeks were mostly composed of a two consecutive days of coverage at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine and a coverage on DOH’s Updates on the Influenza A (A1H1) virus. Unlike Senate, I did not find it boring. I even think that there’s more action there. That both agencies are doing their job and at the same time I get to educate myself on what is the real score of the world’s currently dealt with pandemic. Secretary Duque III, is I think ob=ne of the most functional secretaries in PGMA’s Cabinet.

My last day in the field was the coverage of the Pahiyas Festival. That was again another day that started very early. We left Manila at around 3:30 in the morning, we reached Lucban, Quezon Province around 7:30 in the morning. That was a good 3 hour car ride, we had breakfast and then went to the town proper to take pictures of the many different and very beautifully made decorations inspired by good harvest. Near the town’s church was a antique shop and the design was so beautiful that Sir Rene and I stayed there for more than an hour because he can not seem to take the perfect shot due to the growing number of people who flocked and stayed there each minute. There were really amazing designs made of palay and vegetables to encourage good harvest. I also had the chance to taste the very popular Lucban longganisa which was very different from our longganize here. we had lunch and then had a couple of stop-overs because Rouelle Umali from the Manila Bulletin (the only guy there in his 20s) had to email the photos to his office. We left at around 1 in the afternoon and arrived in Manila by 4:30. It was a very eventful day to leave my internship and go back to continue my journey as a student trying to find her niche in a world of endless possibilities and very tight chances.

B. Describe new skills you learned, or skills you improved upon as a result of these tasks. Be specific.

The skills I’ve learnt were the same as the ones that I’ve learnt for the past weeks, only this time waking up really early was among them and trying to stay awake at 4 in the morning while standing and not of cup of coffee to support me and waiting for the people’s champ tops it all.

C. Other thoughts regarding the OJT experience.

Honestly, I find the rallies boring sometimes and even to the point that I think it is pointless albeit that I still get to learn something from them, form what they do. Like, in one of the rallies that I covered I caught myself thinking, “This is what they’re fighting for, this is what they stand for, what am I doing here? What exactly am I here for?” Those were the instances that I felt inadequate in terms of compelling social issues and understanding on how different Filipinos are especially from that part of the country and from my part of the country.

I feel that I surpassed my goals.

Reyes: Week 3 at Fame, Inc.

A. List down all the tasks that you performed during this period. Describe each in detail.
DAY 13 – I did transcribing the whole day. It was a bit boring and a bit fun. It was frustrating sometimes, not understanding some words and phrases.

DAY 14 – Ezetimibe, simvastatin, hypercholesterolemia. These are just some of the many words that I do not understand and were able to thanks to the internet. Yes, it takes research to know some of these words. Luckily, I have a bunch of fun co-workers who can’t stand the deafening noise of silence. With the team I am with, transcribing is never that boring. It’s just not much of a fun also, especially with all those medical terms in every sentence. I did transcribing for the whole day.

DAY 15 – Today is sadly the last day of my fellow intern, Edrick. He started two weeks earlier than I did. As usual, we were transcribing what I feel are alienated messages. Every twenty minutes or so, we would stop, talk and have a few laughs to keep our sanity. And then, we’re back to transcribing again. I’m guessing there are about a hundred or more words I labeled as BLAH. I try so hard to understand them, repeated them until I’m tired of not understanding them at all. I didn’t want to guess the words or phrases so I temporarily labeled them as BLAH. I’d get back to them later when I’m finally done with it all. We are to transcribe four tapes! We were transcribing for almost the whole day. I only stopped when one of my co-workers asked me for help on filing. Happily, I helped on filing. But, I still ended my day transcribing.

DAY 16 – I came early as always. I’m guessing you know what I did. I did transcribing. Ms. Lucci isn’t around because she was on the on set of our upcoming magazine, Hannah Montana. This was the magazine I modeled at. I saw the mock up and it was awesome. Anyway, I was transcribing, transcribing and transcribing. It feels different not having Edrick around, my fellow transcriber. This is, by the way, the last day of our managing editor. She’s getting married. She would be resigning and Ms. Lucci would replace her. On our lunch out, the owner of our company told us that we would be having a lunch meeting. Lunch came and we were surprised to find out that it was a treat for our managing editor since she refused to have a despedida party. It was not a meeting at all, it was plain eating out filled with laughter. I actually brought a pen and paper just in case I had to jot down notes. Anyway, I ended my day transcribing.

DAY 17 – Transcribing once again. I must admit, there are times when all I want to do is throw the tape. I’ve been listening to the speakers for how many days now, trying to understand his words. I’m starting to think he’s been speaking a different language at times. But obviously, I’m just being lazy. Suddenly, my co-workers were taking out stuff toys from their bags. Bright colored, cutie stuff toys are placed on the table and so I stopped transcribing. I asked them what the stuff toys are for, and they said it’s for the cover shoot of H&L today. Ms. Lucci came and later talked us on the concept of the said cover shoot. It was way cool. Our photoshoot would start this afternoon, 1PM. Afternoon came and we’ve began preparing for the shoot. I have helped into transforming our conference room into a studio. Photoshoots really keep us alive. Not only are we having big smiley faces as the camera spots us, it’s a time to be our goofy selves minus the feeling of working. One of my co-workers is doing the makeup for our model, who is also our co-worker. We were placing all the stuff toys in the box and placed a kite made by my two co-workers as said in the plan. I wish I could help in making the kite but since kite-making wasn’t included in my childhood, all I did was watch and hand them the scissors. There were lots of jokes while working, or should I say, while having fun. And then, when we were done preparing and when the model was ready, we have started our photoshoot. It was all right. The model’s register on the camera is okay, cute actually. And then, in the middle of the shoot, Ms. Lucci suggested that we have our staff shoot after. Of course, being the camera lovers that we are, we agreed. Good thing Edrick, my fellow intern, is on his way to visit us. He would be joining us then. The cover shoot was done in no time. We’e decided to fix the mess after the staff shoot. We’ve decided to go back to our department because the owner of FAME, Inc. is still on a meeting and he would be joining us in the staff shoot. So we went back to our own desks. Ms. Lucci asked me to research health facts, about 20 interesting ones to be included in one of our magazines. And so I did. It was cool. By the way, I keep saying cool because one of my co-workers say this word for countless times everyday and it’s actually contagious. It was really nice to stop transcribing for a while. I find researching health tips really educating. I chose about 30 tips that I find attention-grabbing so that Ms. Lucci could delete the ones she dislikes. I saved it on the desktop. Finally, Doc (how we always call the owner of FAME), was done with his meeting. Staff shoot time was finally coming up. With our love for the camera and being smiling goofs, we undeniably had fun. Doc was actually having fun, too. We were switching places, smiling, smiling and more smiling was done. And then it was over. But there were solo shots done just for the fun of placing it on each other’s facebook. And then, we ended our day with a meeting headed by Ms. Lucci. Our meeting wasn’t the kind of meeting I used to see in the movies – boring. Our meeting was participative, very noisy actually; yet, it was productive. They were discussing the things to o because deadline is very fast approaching and they cannot afford to be late.

B. Describe new skills you learned, or skills you improved upon as a result of these tasks. Be specific.
Patience, more patience, and determination. These are the skills I had at hand to survive transcribing. I am proud to say I am a constant early bird. Sometimes I arrive way too early; I end up waiting for someone to open the office. Experience is indeed the best teacher. I learn a lot as I have fun. I have not been writing for the past few days but I’m proud to say that two of my articles will be published. (Yipee!) I’m working hard on my undesirable number one habit: procrastination. I’ve been self-motivated, really. I see to it that I work well in a team or independently. I am determined in whatever I do. Not only that, I’m having a superb experience with the people I am working with. I feel I am a great company of everyone. My people skills are up. I think, and really hope, that I’ve made a good impression that would last even as I leave.

C. Other thoughts regarding the OJT experience.
It feels sad knowing I only have two more days left. I want to stay longer! Anyway, I’ve given more than the required hours and I’m still planning to visit them while I’m here. Did I mention that we have an allowance? A hundred fifty a day! I feel so blessed. I guess it would be okay to join them in their gimmicks after not being an intern anymore, soon. Tomorrow would be my last day. My last report would be on today and tomorrow. They are planning to do a general cleaning this Saturday and I’m thinking on joining them. All in all, I think I have the coolest on-the-job training, ever!

De Leon: Week 5 at Peace Works

A. List down all the tasks that you performed during this period. Describe each in detail.

May 11, 2009
Since I failed to submit two articles last week, I have to write two articles this week. Four options were given to me. First is the Buddha Day celebration of Tzu Chi Zamboanga. The other is the opening ceremony of the Youth Peace Camp in San Ramon. Third is a feature about the veiling (turong, hijab) practices of young Muslims in Zamboanga if the story on women crisis is not possible.

What I did first is to contact DSWD once again to follow up if I can cover the story on domestic violence against mothers. However, there were no positive responses so I decided to take the other options. Luckily, when I opened my e-mail, Dr. Lim, the local coordinator of Tzu Chi Zamboanga, sent me a full archive of the Buddha Day Celebration photos. When I asked him if we could meet for some background information about the event, he willingly granted the interview on Thursday afternoon.

At around four in the afternoon, I dropped by the office of PAZ to talk Ma’am Arweda. When I arrived their, the YSP who are part of the facilitating team were having their meeting with Aldrin and so I had the chance to get an overview on how the camp will proceed. Then, I asked several questions to ma’am Arweda and Aldrin as well. That day, I already had sufficient information as background for the event. I was very glad because Ma’am Arweda offered me to go with the transportation of the participants on the way to San Ramon.

May 13, 2009
As scheduled, I went to the solidarity center before twelve noon. I met some participants and talked with some facilitators and mediators. We went at around 1:30 PM. I was very excited because it was my first time to go to San Ramon. I was brining with me a copy of the matrix of activities that Aldrin sent through my e-mail. Then, when I arrived there, he promised that he’d give me a copy of the opening program. So, I got my copy, took some photos, talked with some participants and I was jut observing. The guests arrived at past three, so the program started late.

I witnessed the entire opening ceremony and recorded Mr. Kenoh’s speech while I was also taking some pictures. Then, we went back to PAZ office down five PM, I was together with some PAZ staff members.

That evening, I organized my information and wrote the story. Afterwards, I took a look at all the pictures during the Buddha Day and thought of the questions that I’ll be asking the following day.

May 14, 2009
Dr. Lim and I agreed to have the interview at two in the afternoon at the Eye Center. So, I went there and it al ran smoothly. It was just like a casual conversation, he gave me some papers that would further explain the ceremony. Then, we watched the video of master Cheng Yen from Taiwan, which was also shown in all Buddha Bathing ceremonies held around the globe. Then, I went out and have some casual talks with other nurses and volunteers who were there and I already met in the earlier interview that I had. That night, I started to write the story.

May 15, 2009
I read the two stories that I wrote and had some revisions. Then, I sent the file to my editor. There were so many photos for both stories and I was so confused on which ones to use. So, I viewed all the photos and picked five photos for each story.

May 16, 2009
I realized that I didn’t write captions for my photos and we were supposed to send the photos with captions to our editor. So, I wrote the captions for the three final photos for each story and then sent them to my editor. Then, at three in the afternoon, we had our weekly consultation yet we had nothing much to talk about. So, we started uploading the stories and the photos and went home early.

B. Describe new skills you learned, or skills you improved upon as a result of these tasks. Be specific.
* The previous weeks, I noticed that whenever I conduct interviews, I do not immediately write the story. What I usually do is to write the information, arrange them, conceptualize the flow of the story then do the writing the following days. But this week, I was able to write the story at the same that I gathered the information that I needed. Maybe, it helped me a lot to understand the story and know immediately which information to use while doing the information selection because I felt at ease with the environment. It was my second time to talk to Dr. Lim and I was already comfortable asking him questions and talking with the people in the center as well as in the youth peace camp because I already know the people working in PAZ. Well, maybe this is one benefit of having a network of connections. You work easier when you are comfortable with what you are doing. And that is one thing that I experienced this week.

* In terms of writing, I learn a lot from how Sir Rey does the editing of our stories. The choice of words, arrangement of words and how to put emphasis on some points. Although, this cannot be learned easily because this is only learned through practice. Yet, I learn many things especially on the writing style from Sir Rey.

* Headline writing. We never learned this inside the class. Also, our editor did not teach us how to do headline writing. However, after completing seven stories and seeing thhe headlines and how our editor writes it on front of us, I somehow got an idea on how this is done. We ask him how he was able to come up with the right words and all and gave us some tips. Although, I cannot say that I am already capable of writing good headlines.

C. Other thoughts regarding the OJT experience.
I personally feel happy and contented this week for completing two stories assignments. Last week was really a bad week. And so I felt that at least I made up for my shortcomings this week.

It was actually my first time to go to San Ramon. And so the feeling of excitement was really present while the bus was heading to the campsite. There were no serious problems encountered this week. And I think that it was easier for me because the topics assigned were ones, which I am already acquainted with. Like in the Tzu Chi foundation, I have already established a good connection with people inside as well as in the PAZ office.

Basically, everything ran smoothly and right now I don’t think that doing this job is some kind of a burden, which was what I was sometimes feeling the previous weeks. Maybe, I have already adjusted little and I’m already starting to enjoy what I am doing. J
